A guitar setup is regular maintenance and check up that’s done on the guitar that involves multiple of adjustments such as replacing strings, adjusting the neck relief, raising or lowering the string height, lower or increase the saddle height, frets cleaning, fretboard cleaning and nourishment etc.The idea is to modify a number of parts on a guitar in order to make that instrument play and feel well for a particular player.Even new guitars need to be set up for the right playability. For electric instruments the basic setup will include a preliminary hardware and circuit inspection. Adjust the truss rod, set the: action, intonation, and pickup heights. Where applicable additional hardware is re-adjusted. When all the adjustments are made the instrument fretboard is conditioned polished up and gets a fresh set of strings. For a very detailed setup it could take over a week as it's a very time consuming and complex process, wherein we fine tune your guitar once optimal or standard specifications are done, we then make what we call as micro adjustments to the nut, saddle, pick ups, truss rod and experiment with different stings to suit your guitar etc. These adjustments are made is small increments and observed as to how the guitar react after 24 hours. This is done with the objectives of bringing out the best tone, dynamic range, playability and intonation that particular guitar has to offer. This technique is develop with years of experience as every guitar is different in its tonal spectrum even from the same brand or model, as it's made mostly of wood that have some inconsistencies and can react differently to stings tension, humidity and temperature. In our experience, we have seen guitars worth over USD10,000 poorly setup, only to sound like inexpensive instruments. Once properly setup they exuberate their full tonal characteristics, playability and dynamic range. A properly adjusted instrument will be more touch sensitive, have better tone, and often projects better than in it's previous state.Contact Leroy at Intune Instruments, UAE for Guitar Repairs setups on +971 50 3950482 or email us at info@intuneinstruments.com

A typical basic setup on most instruments will take 24 - 48 hours depending on the severity of the correction work needed to get the instrument setup back to optimal playability or to your specific requirements. It is most common for a 2 to 4 day turn around on work depending on the time of year and how busy we are. It's not always possible to give an accurate quote on price for a repair, especially for extensive damage and for acoustic instruments where internal damages may not be visible without inspecting the instrument internally. In short, it may be possible to estimate a price, but the final quote will always be made upon inspection.Contact Leroy at Intune Instruments, UAE for Guitar Repairs and Guitar Damage repairs on +971 50 3950482 or email us at info@intuneinstruments.com

Have you ever tuned your guitar perfectly on all open strings and then when you play high up on the fretboard, it still sounds out of tune? Also some chords just sound not in tune a good example is the D chord on the second fret where the F# note sounds a bit off. This is a sign your guitar needs to be intonated. Intonation refers to the accuracy of pitch on each note across the fretboad. While your guitar may be in tune when you play your open string, it may be too sharp or flat at your 12th fret or other frets. A basic intonation involves adjustments- Saddle compensation adjustments- increasing or lowering action A complete intonation involves the following adjustments:- new compensated nut and saddle (sometimes using a cantilevered nut and saddle to adjust to compensation values)- Fret levelling, re-crowing & polishing Further additional jobs may also be needed such as fretboard levelling and installation of new frets. To correct this, you would need your guitar intonated by compensating the nut and saddle (a special cantilevered nut and saddle made be needed as most nut and saddles have limited headroom. . Most of the time your guitar may not need a neck reset. Before you agree for a neck reset please feel free to check with us. We will give you an honest opinion. You got to remember that this is a complicated job and should be done by an expert in this area. As a steel-string acoustic guitar exerts a high amount of torque on the bridge and the sound board, over time the odds are it will need a neck reset at some point in its life. Wood settles and string tension pulls the guitar’s geometry around over time. When this happens the action gets slowly higher and higher and becomes uncomfortable to play even after lowering the saddle and sanding down the bridge height. During the process of a neck reset, the neck is removed and the angle at which it joins the body is modified to tilt it back by making small adjustments to the neck heel. This means it follows the plane of the strings more closely. We also do a less intrusive neck reset without removing the guitar neck, however, this process will take a minimum of a month for the guitar neck to reset. On expensive and vintage guitar this may work well and it will also help to retain the instruments value. For the Classical guitars that have a Spanish heel and no dove tail joint at the neck this process is best suited for this job. The success rate for this method is around 75% and is cheaper and less risky than taking the guitar neck completely off for correction of the neck angle. A acoustic or classical guitar saddle performs very important functions. It's the point of contact at which the stings transmit vibrations through the bridge on to the body. It also establishes the action of the guitar while also setting the radius to work with the curvature of the fingerboard. Having the right material, height above the bridge and string angle from saddle to bridge pins are all a part of the mix. Below are some of the reasons to consider to replace a guitar saddle:- Once the saddle becomes loose in the saddle slot and can fall off easily if the guitar is tilted at an angle. This can cause the guitar bridge to crack and produce poor tone and volume. The saddle should be made by an expert and should be flat at the bottom and press fitted in the slot (not too tight and not too loose). Then there are micro adjustments to be made to match the guitar radius and setting the best intonation. - If its made from plastic and if you are looking for more tone and volume projection. Then it should be replaced by bone or Tusq.- If the saddle slot dept is too shallow that causes the top edge of the saddle to tilt in a forward direction. In this case the saddle slot should be cut slightly deeper. - When a saddle is worn out, cracked, damaged or loose in the slot it should be replaced.Contact Leroy at Intune Instruments Guitar Repairs and Restoration, UAE for Guitar Repairs and Guitar Refinishing on +971 50 3950482 or email us at info@intuneinstruments.com

This is a common question put to us. Over time with playing your steel string acoustic or electric frets will develop small grooves or divots or get worn in certain sections (mostly between frets 1-5). This causes the top of the fret to become uneven and flattened causing string buzzing and intonation issues. A guitar can play perfectly well for a while with this wear but eventually, it needs to be addressed. We can usually ‘dress’ the frets to remove divots and irregularities and re-crown them to bring back to original shape. It is important to dress all of the frets so as to not have uneven frets. Eventually, after a couple of fret dressings, they will need to be replaced – either a full or partial re-fret.Contact Leroy at Intune Instruments Guitar Repairs and Restoration, UAE for Guitar Repairs and Guitar Refinishing on +971 50 3950482 or email us at info@intuneinstruments.com

Fret dress is a process of leveling frets with a flat, straight abrasive surface removing high spots on the frets that will lead to eliminating or reducing string buzzing. Once the frets are levelled they then are re-crowned using a fret crowning file and then polished to a mirror-smooth surface. New guitars can benefit from a fret dress, as some may have uneven frets. Also changes in humidity and temperature can lead to uneven frets that cause buzzing and intonation issues. A fret dress can also be used to correct minor defects in a guitar neck.Contact Leroy at Intune Instruments Guitar Repairs and Restoration, UAE for Guitar Repairs and Guitar Refinishing on +971 50 3950482 or email us at info@intuneinstruments.com

Refretting a guitar consists of replacing worn-out frets with newer ones. Over many years of playing a guitar the frets especially on steel strings and electric guitars get damaged and have to be frets replaced. It can be an expensive process but this is never the time to try and save money on a someone quoting you a price that is too good to be true as this job involves care and experience. Sometimes it would also involve levelling of the fretboard due to changes that happen to the fretboard wood due to humidity and temperature changes. A professional guitar tech or luthier will remove the old frets and replace them carefully.Refrets are a procedure completely normal for even vintage guitars or guitars where the frets have been worn out due play wear. What are the noticeable signs to know that your guitar needs a refret rather than a redress- When several fret dressings have lead to no more headroom to lower and level the frets anymore. - Deep groves on the frets are noticed that cause poor intonation and buzzing.- Whilst bending strings it is no longer as comfortable.- When you press specific notes up and down the fretboard, you’ll get twanging harsh sounds. - Sliding notes up and down the fretboard feels harder to play and uneven on the fingers.- The overall sound of your guitar loses richness because the strings pivot unevenly on different frets or parts of the fret.- Overall, the playing experience is just not as comfortable, and harder to play chords,; mostly barre chords don't sound clean and in tune. What material are best for new frets? There are a number of factors that influence the sound and feel of fret wire. From the width, to the size and shape of the crown (the top part that we actually place our fingers on), or the material.EVO Gold: This are a more modern addition to fret materials. There are somewhere in between nickel silver and stainless steel fret wires. It uses an alloy of copper and tin. They are also more expensive and it worth looking at if you tend to play a lot. The also look beautiful when polished. It now seems that Jesscar has stopped manufacturing EVO Gold frets due to constraints to source a particular raw material. However, STEWART MAC gold fret can be used as an alternative. Stainless Steel: Stainless steel is the sturdy, long-lasting option of the three. Adjusting them takes forever but they stay as good as new, shiny and slippery as the first day. That said, they work well on a dull sounding guitar and they then to provide a very bright and tinny tone. Nickel Silver: It will deliver the warmest tone, the most sustain, and is not as slippery as stainless steel. It still is the industry standard by far.Contact Leroy at Intune Instruments Guitar Repairs and Restoration, UAE for Guitar Repairs and Guitar Refinishing on +971 50 3950482 or email us at info@intuneinstruments.com

We are regularly contacted regarding this service. Yes, we do! That said, if the guitar has to be picked up and dropped off in Dubai or Sharjah, we charge AED100 for this service. For jobs over AED500, we provide a free pick and drop service in Dubai and Sharjah. Please note we don't use a local courier service for this and our representative personally picks up and drops off your guitar that is kept in an air conditioned car and properly cared for during the transportation to and fro. Alternatively, you can also ship or courier your guitar to us at your 'own risk'. We suggest using a reliable courier or logistics service company. Please note that if you are using this service to ensure that the guitar is packed properly. Here are some important tips that you need to take before shipping . 1) Loosen the strings on your guitar. You don’t need to completely detune or remove the strings on your instrument as this may scratch the finish of your guitar, but you should loosen the tension on the neck of the guitar, so the neck of the instrument doesn’t warp or snap due to sting tension torque on the bridge. You should detune your strings down an around two octaves. 2) Secure parts that can move on the guitar or within the case. When shipping out your instrument, you shouldn’t have anything rattling around on the guitar or in the case. Parts that move around (such as whammy/tremolo bar or a tremolo bridge) in a newspaper or another type of packing material.3) Wrap the headstock up! The headstock of the guitar is one of the most sensitive parts of the instrument, so make sure that it’s wrapped up nice and snug in newspaper or packing material or soft cotton cloth in the case.3)Protect the finish of your guitar. Covering the body of your instrument isn’t necessary, but it does provide the instrument with extra protection against any possibility of damage.4) Separate the strings from your fretboard by using newspaper or bubble wrap. Keeping the strings from touching the fretboard while you’re shipping your guitar will prevent the strings from hitting up against the fretboard, which may cause excessive wearing on the fretboard or starch the guitar due to detunning or loosening. 5) If you have your guitar placed inside of a case for shipping, pack any open spaces in the case newspaper or packing material to minimise the amount your guitar can move around in the case while being shipped. This will reduce the amount of damage that your guitar is exposed to.6) Ensure that your shipping company has sufficient insurance coverage to cover lost, stolen and damage goods. 7) Generally, the UAE can be get quiet humid during the summer months with relative humidity sometimes over 90%. Therefore, placing a few packets of silica gel in the case may be a good idea (ensure that this is kept in the case compartment securely, so that it doesn't leak out and scratch the guitar during shipping). During the months, between November to April this step is not really necessary as the relative humidity is generally within 40-55%. 8) If you are shipping from within the UAE, please check with your courier company that the goods are delivered the next business day. Therefore, avoid shipping on weekends. You don't want your guitar lying in a warehouse where we don't know what the temperature is. There are numerous things that could cause these problems such as unpleasant sounds – hums, rattles, pops, breakups and hisses. Here are some on the common problem areas. 1)Damaged wiring2)Dirty control pots (Volume & Tone controls) and switches3)Badly earthed components4)Dirty/dodgy output jacks5) Lack of shielding from electrical interference. These can be fixed on our shop. That said some single coil pickups tend to be a little noisy. This is just like active electronic on certain acoustic or electric guitars. These problems can't be solved and the solution could be to remove the troubling frequencies with an EQ and or a noise gate pedal. Some times buzz from active electronics can be also due to a low reserve power on your 9v battery. Try changing the battery and this will may improve the signal flow. If noise, buzz or hum from your guitar is as loud or louder than your guitar, you may have a bad ground inside your guitar. If your guitar has this issue the ground will need to be re-soldered.Contact Leroy at Intune Instruments Guitar Repairs and Restoration, UAE for Guitar Repairs on +971 50 3950482 or email us at info@intuneinstruments.com

Some common causes leading a Guitar's high action :- Changes in temperature and high humidity could have contributed to the wood of your neck pulling forward with string tension. This causes an excessive forward or up-bow in the neck.- The Nut and Saddle slot high may be a bit too high.- Due to high humidity and excessive string tension over the years the guitar's belly could have arched upwards causing the string height to increase. - The guitar neck angle could have permanently changed over the years, this would need a neck reset to correct the neck angle. - The bridge on the guitar could be lifting up. Yes, in most cases these problems can be resolved. At Intune Instruments, UAE we handle many cases where high action is an issue. That said, please bear in mind when your action is too low, it may be easier to press the strings down, but there are compromises here too - such as tonal nuance, frequency range, volume can be lost and the most annoying could be excessive string buzzing. When it comes to action, lower is not necessarily better. Finding the right balance based on the preferred string action needed for different types of guitars is what needed. For example, the string action recommended for a Classical Guitar is different compared to an Electric Guitar. Contact Leroy at Intune Instruments Guitar Repairs and Restoration, UAE for Guitar Repairs on +971 50 3950482 or email us at info@intuneinstruments.com.Further, a player shouldn't be caught up too obsessively to have the absolute on spot on guitar action, as each guitar and guitarist is different. There has to always be some bit of a comprise to get the balance correct with playability, dynamics and tonality of a guitar. Some left hand techniques can also help improve playability, a good example is a classical guitar as the action on a classical guitar is higher compared to an acoustic and electric guitar. Classical Guitarist learn to use a left hand technique where the dead weight of the hand helps to press down the strings keeping the fingers relaxed and muscle tension mainly felt on the left hand biceps. Yes, these can be easily fixed at Intune Instruments Guitar Repairs.Sharp fret ends, causing discomfort and potential injuries to guitar players, are often the result of humidity changes. When the wooden parts of a guitar neck dry out due to low humidity, they can shrink, leaving the unchanging metal frets protruding over the fretboard's edges. This issue can be more common in lower-cost guitars, where essential steps of fret dressing might be skipped to cut production costs. However, it's not an inevitable fate for your instrument. One key to preventing sharp fret ends is proper storage. Keeping your guitar in a controlled environment with consistent temperature and humidity can help maintain the neck's integrity and prevent the wood from shrinking. If sharp fret ends do occur, a qualified guitar technician can file them down, enhancing the guitar's playability and safety. In essence, with proper storage and maintenance, you can avoid discomfort and fully enjoy your playing experience.Contact Leroy at Intune Instruments Guitar Repairs and Restoration, UAE for Guitar Repairs on +971 50 3950482 or email us at info@intuneinstruments.com

The neck of a guitar is vulnerable to changes such as warping, twisting, or bowing, often due to constant string tension and fluctuations in environmental conditions. These changes can lead to undesirable effects like fret buzz, tuning instability, dead notes—spots where the string doesn't ring out—and in severe cases, can even render the guitar unplayable. This could happen if the guitar is stored for long duration with the string tension at concert pitch, this could put unnecessary strain coupled with very high/ low humidity causing your guitar neck to warp. To maintain the straightness of the neck, regular truss rod adjustments are vital. Furthermore, proper storage in a stable temperature and humidity-controlled environment can assist in preventing such issues. However, if regular adjustments and proper storage fail to rectify the neck's condition, it might require a more intensive repair process. This could involve heat-treating, a process where controlled heat is applied to realign the wood. This is a common problem found on guitars and be fixed by us at Intune Instruments Guitar Repairs, UAE. A professional should be consulted if your bridge is lifting. Here are the causes for the guitar bridge lifting or pulling up. 1) The tension that the strings put on the bridge and neck. This pressure can cause the neck to form an up bow causing the soundboard at the belly section of the guitar to bulge and this could lead to the bridge glue coming loose. 2)The bridge can start to lift due to improper humidity control, causing the wood to dry out or become overly humidified, as well as constant string tension. This can lead to serious structural damage. 3) The Bridge was glued incorrectly. If at the time of manufacture, the person handling the finishing and bridge installation were not careful, then the bridge would have been installed incorrectly. Adhesives work best when they make a proper contact, that means there should be a clean and proper contoured surface wherein the guitar soundboard convex radius matches the bridge convex radius making a firm solid contact point and bond. Yes, this Tuning Instability problems can be fixed by us. The problems can occur due to mechanical and /or environmental issues. Changes in temperature and humidity, new strings haven't broken in or settled in, high action, too much neck relief, loose machine heads, improperly cut nut slots and improperly seated strings in bridge pins can all lead to tuning instability. Furthermore, corroded strings or parts can contribute to this issue, as they can interfere with the smooth movement of the strings. However, regular tuning using a dependable tuner, careful maintenance, and proper string handling can help maintain your guitar's pitch. Tighten the machine heads, ensure the strings are correctly seated in the bridge pins, and stretch your strings properly so they settle nicely at the bridge end and remain taut at the machine heads. An often overlooked but essential aspect of guitar care is lubrication. Applying a small amount of lubricant to the nut and bridge can reduce friction, allowing for smoother string movement and enhancing tuning stability. In essence, keeping your guitar in tune requires regular adjustments, diligent care, and the strategic use of lubrication. String breakage on a guitar can occur due to a variety of factors, including aggressive strumming force, strings have gone worn-out, corrosion, or use inferior quality strings. Regularly replacing your guitar strings and developing a controlled playing string attack can help mitigate this issue. That said, strings especially the finer or thinner gauges such as the 1st, 2nd and 3rd strings are particularly prone to breakage when they become corroded, overtightened beyond the required tuning point. Signs of corrosion can include discolouration and visible dent marks on the strings.Regular cleaning can also help to increase string life. One can use of specific products like string lubricants. These products, often mineral oil-based, repel moisture and slow down the corrosion process.
